I don't know if Andraz said but the race area was bordered by two river banks, with a marina in the pre-start area and several large barges moving about as obstructions!

I don't have many insights into the Seminar, other than not to focus too much on the performance assessment. We were umpiring the Polish National Championships which had good racing, fantastic weather and a really good venue/organization - all of which I really enjoyed. It was good to be able to step back and focus on your umpiring and get some guidance from the instructors (who were extremely good).

I hope that helps,
JonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9170261917486213112.post-90436910669863913462008-06-16T19:16:00.000+02:002008-06-16T19:16:00.000+02:00Thanks for the update Andraz.Still very difficult ...Thanks for the update Andraz.

Still very difficult to achieve the standard, ISAF wants.

You need self education specially if your base in the country isn't geared up to educate.
Please pass on your knowledge to the next umpire... Which I know you will.Joshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10346870418220762709noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9170261917486213112.post-43606121667601781912008-06-16T18:12:00.000+02:002008-06-16T18:12:00.000+02:00Hi Jos!I attended the seminar in Gdansk (POL) a we...Hi Jos!

I attended the seminar in Gdansk (POL) a week ago. I can just copy and confirm your writing. :)

There were 9 participants on this event. Two already passed the test, from the remainig seven, six were successfull, but only three passed the performance assessment.

Hard to believe, but I think it is part of the saying: "You must know all the rules before you can break them.". Therefore the instructors are paying attention to every detail.
But the main principle is, as I understand it, you should always be prepared to explain your actions and decisions to the competitors - so you must be very well prepared.

In our case we actually discussed winging for some 25 minutes in class, some more on water, but on an individual basis with the instructor.

Every umpire should master all the aspects of the umpiring, so some self-education is in place. Since there is no other formal umpire training, we should accept that.

In early days I learend mostly following the method "learning-by-doing", but as the events are higher graded, you should fulfill your knowledge through discussions with other umpires.Andražhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02227730782637834707noreply@blogger.com
