Why Holland isn't the Netherlands

For everybody who was sick of me talking about Holland, The Netherlands and Dutch:

The next time I'll open my lap top and show you the video, okay?

Have a good Christmas!

  1. Happy new year from the lake of Geneva (Le Léman in french)

  2. This article attracts the interest of us. In Japan almost people call your country Holland.
In the video there is a 2000-yen bill, what does it mean? The gate appeared on the bill is Shurei-mon (Shurei-gate) in the Shuri neighborhood of Naha, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Shurei means 'Land of Propriety'.
May you have a restful time over Christmas and New Year and I wish happiness and prosperity for you in 2013.
    Sen / Japan

  3. Gaaaaah!
I showed this to a couple of geniune Netherlanders; They themselves seem to mix up Holland with those two Hollands. On top of that there's Francois Hollande in France. It's a mess...

  4. Hilarious!
(as a Dutchman living in Canada)

  5. As everybody knows Holland is an area of Lincolnshire in eastern England. It was a separate county council from 1888 until 1974. The area known as Holland now consists of the local government districts of Boston (no not that one) and South Holland.

Before 1888 Holland consisted of the three wapentakes of Elloe, Kirton and Skirbeck. Please don't ask me what a wapentake is!

  6. and if you think this is complicated, just wait till Jos goes on to explain Friesland ;)

  7. @Angelica
I'm normally pretty careful not to let advertising into the comments, but I'll make an exception for you. Because I've lived and worked in Dubai for half a year when I was a trainee for school... A long time ago in 1981-82. I would love to go back and have a look at the city again.
So, how about a International Regatta where you need an IJ?
Can you fix that for me, Angelica?
