Rule 42 deals with propulsion.
Most judges have been involved more or less in on-the-water judging of rule 42. In order to get a consistent level ISAF publishes Interpretations of rule 42. Some say the interpretations are very difficult, but like in most things, it is a matter of how much you study them.
The latest help to understand these interpretations appeared on the ISAF web site yesterday:

10 out of 21. To be fair, anyone that can make any decent gains out of pumping a skiff deserves a prize, not penalty, and I'm a skiff sailor...

ReplyDeleteThis is typically a test-question and answer. Because flag O applies after the signal - theoretically a boat can pump, roll etc before she has crossed the line and therefore before the boat has started.....

Question:
When flag “O” was displayed at the 470s warning signal, alteration of rule 42 applies after starting.
Explanation.:
470 class rule C1.1(a)(1), P5(a) Alteration of rule 42 in 470 class applies after the starting signal.
And then states "FALSE" as the correct Answer....
Of course when O is displayed at the warning, 42 is still in effect until the starting signal.
