FTBD (7)

I would very much like to hear what you want from this blog, on this seventh 'flog the blog'-day.

Be as frank as you like.

Tell me about the posts you liked,
Tell me about that posts you thought were crap,
Tell me about the one from which you actually learned something new,
Tell me about where I should be more focused on,
Tell me about why you've subscribed and expect from 'Look to Windward'

I've given you plenty to read, so you might have gained some insight on who I am. Now tell me what I should write about..

What I would like, is a new logo for this blog; something to stick on every publication, when used outside the blog...
Any suggestions?

I've come this far:

  1. Be as frank as you like.
I will take you at your word.

Tell me about the posts you liked,
I read this to improve my understanding of the rrs. The more I realize that goal, the more I like it.

Tell me about that posts you thought were crap,
There are three ways that a post can be crap. 1. It was poorly done. I did not see any of those. 2. The content did not interest me. This is not written for me alone. 3. There was a technical issue that made it unreadable. There were a couple of those. Diagrams that were to small to read, but with out the resolution necessary to blow them up in photoshop or ??. Also my browser cuts about a ½" of the right side. Some text is missing, sometimes.

Tell me about the one from which you actually learned something new,
Several. That’s why I read it. I especially like it when the answer/ solid opinions are presented. This could be the next day, after we have worked on the problem for a while.

Tell me about where I should be more focused on,
For me! I read to learn and improve my knowledge of the rules. I don’t get much exposure to match racing or team racing outside of the newspaper. There is some.

Tell me about why you've subscribed and expect from 'Look to Windward'
I subscribed to help me improve my knowledge of the rules. Your posts with diagrams and explanations (perhaps in the next post) are what I look for.

Question; Would it be possible for readers to submit a situation and have the group give input on how it should be resolved?

You asked that I be frank. I enjoy this blog and thank you for taking the time to put it together.

  2. @g.noel,
    Thank for your input!
I'll have a look at my posts in IExplorers (I use Firefox) to see if the posts get distorted.
Why it cuts of words I have no idea. I'll mind my resolution for pictures.
If all fails, you can always click on the bottempost- line going directly to the blog

Of course you can ask questions about situations. I'll gladly put them up and everybody can have a go.

  3. I like the nitty gritty discussions of the finer points of the rules, especially starting and rounding marks. What will be different with the 2009 RRS?

  4. Rules, rules and more rules.

I was looking for someone to help explain a finishing line situation. Through the Tillerman blog I found you. Just down the road in Friesland. Now I read your blog every day.

What is interesting to me are the nuts and bolts of the rules and their interpretation. I sail at club level, maybe next year a national event. Still our races begin with a start, involve a number of buoy roundings and end with a finishing line, just like the Olympics.
That’s what makes sailboat racing unique. The combination of physical and mental sport - like playing chess while running a half-marathon. If you don’t know the rules and can’t look ahead and see how to avoid problems you start with a disadvantage.

Please keep writing about the Racing Rules of Sailing, from A [the rules everybody must know when racing] to Z [AC jury calls]. Thank you, Andrew

  5. Great emails, thanks!

I would most appreciate just a basic rules quiz, on fairly common situations, sent by email a couple times a week. Just something to keep me thinking/learning/reviewing rules a few times a week.

  6. I like the rules questions.

The comments on protests past from which one can learn.

The TSS match Racing posts are of interest.

The series on Definitions whilst basic were a good revision.

Ideas on how to pass the exams would help newcomers'

Some of the other blogs you referred us to were a disappointment

Just look for more rules related matters.

None of the pictures seemed to reflect the Blog.

More of a TSS diagram with RRS - Blog over it perhaps in the V under the windward mark diagram. Possibly a few boats rounding the mark.
