Changing the ranks; one point at a time

From a presentation I witnessed last Tuesday about the upcoming changes in the rules 2013-2016, I learned that the Bonus point system will be deleted. Rule 90.3, Appendix A4 and A4.1 will be changed accordingly.

I've done a quick calculation, using the results of the recently sailed Yngling 2012 World Championship in Sydney Austrailia to see what the effect on places would have been. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating any particular system, just wanted to have a look if it made any difference.

The first 10 boats out of a fleet of 45 with the Low Points System:

 Then the first 10 boats with the same results with the Bonus Points System:

Finally the first 10 boats with the Austrian Points System:

What is you opinion?
Is the Low Points System enough, or should we keep an option open for other systems?

In the Extreme Sailing Series we use the Low Points System - but in reverse. First place gets most points and the winner is the boat with the most points in the series. (This is because Joe the Public can't understand that someone with 0 points can win anything)

would be next to impossible.

  1. Dear Jos;
    I do hope the Bonus point system shall not be deleted.
    Do you know Mrs. Ryoko?
    Ryoko Tani, (née Tamura, born September 6, 1975) is a Japanese female Judoka (Judo expert). She is the world's most famous and successful judoka.
    She won 5 Olympic medals that were two silver medals at Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996, and two Gold medals at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, and a Bronze medal at Beijing 2008. And also she has been the world champion for six consecutive times from 1993 through 2003. She is indeed Mr.Ben of Judo world?
    She retired from Judo in 2010 and now is a member of the House of Councilors of Japan. Her husband is a professional baseball player.

    She made wise remarks before the Beijing Olympic Games that “The best is the Gold medal, but the worst is the Gold medal for me. The Gold medal is my only wish.”

    I think the difference between the first place and the second is not the same level with the difference between the second and the third.
    In Japan, the Bonus point system has been used occasionally, not frequently.

  2. Surely, the Bonus point system will no longer be in the rule book but will be available for classes and events if detailed in the class rules or NOR and SIs.

    Some classes will continue to use the Bonus points system, whilst Several classes use variants of standard scoring systems as detailed in their class rules.

    Standard scoring programmes cater for several scoring systems, including different high point systems which are intended for use in a series longer than a regatta.

  3. @Sen
    Thank you Sen; And thank you Mrs. Ryoko; wise words indeed!

    I have the distinct feeling this is again one little step to make our sport 'less' complicated - to satisfy outside interests.... (read money)
    We should make it more complicated instead, make it exclusive, make it educational. I bet sailors who had to compete under the Austrian Points System actually knew what Log(10) was. Who does now?

  4. By the way, I cannot view four diagrams on this article.
    Is my PC a bad condition?

  5. Yes Sen, I noticed it when the post came in over Email.
    I'll change the pictures. Somehow the excel sheets got scrambled.

  6. Dear Jos;

    Dear Gordon;
    I used to be a Snipe sailor. The Snipe class is the most popular dinghy with ranks with the 470 class in Japan.
    The Snipe had a unique SCIRA Low Point System, which was similar to RRS Low Point System, but only the first place scored 0.75 points.
    But the system was repealed on June 1, 2009.
    Refer to:

  7. The bonus- high points system aids casual club sailing by allowing all competitors to get a result; and not be eliminated by not partaking in the required number of races.
    It also encourages attendance at all races, as the day you miss may have lots of extra entrants, so your series rivals might gain an advantage.

  8. As asserted in the post, the Bonus point system has now been deleted as a 'default' option in the RRS 2013-2016.
    It is however still possible to use it for any of the reasons mentioned in the above comments. Just put it in the Sailing Instructions. You will need to specify the system with places and points, but that should not be to difficult.
