Feedburner Email Services Restored

Looks like the email service by Feedburner has been restored. If all is as it should be, you've now received at least two blogposts through Feedburner.

While updating you from my own computer - using the mailing list downloaded from Feedburner - I got a whole bunch of messages with delivery failures. It is my own fault, I haven't been blogging, so changes in your Email addressees were not noticed before.

Some 45 people, previously included in the mailing list, have not received any update because of this.
So if you read this post, and have NOT gotten any updates in your mail, there's a big chance that your Email address is no longer valid.

The only solution, if you want to receive mails from LTW, is to re-subscribe with a working Email address. Use the button below or the one on the top left...

Race Management Program for Finishing

Today I'm asking for your help (again).
I'm looking for a software program that can accurately score a finish in a regatta. On a tablet or phone. Anything with a touchscreen.

To start with you have an entry list with all the sail numbers. They are sorted in order. At the finish line you tab the number of the boat/kite/board coming in and it records the number with a time.
The number is deleted from the list or at least changes color or some such distinction. (In special cases you should be able to record a finisher twice, remember?)


I can imagine making something like this in a spreadsheet - Excel or whatever - but that would require typing in a number - something that in some classes is a drag. (how many digits does a laser sail number have again?)

So my question to you: Is there anything like this currently available or 'in the making'?

OneOFive -system for Rule 42 and 63

As many of you know, I developed an on-line Rule 42 and Protest Hearing schedule system.
I try to constantly fix all bugs, and it seems there are not many left...

The system got used at several bigger events now, and most judges were able to work with it without any training. I made the download version a little bit more streamlined, so that you don't have any test data with it any more, but it works 'out of the box' with little set up required.
I re-wrote the install instructions as well, so that it is less focused on the technical part and more on how to just make it work.

But mainly I just registered the domain http://juryboard.org
And as I have unlimited sub-domains there, I'm happy to offer anybody who wants to use it a free install there. So if you want to give it a try but don't want the hassle of installing it, just let me know.

YOU-TACK version 1.3

Please permit me a post about this application for your Android or iPhone/iPad. In recent months I’ve been (re)writing the comments for it and it has been a lot of work.

You-Tack is THE Racing sailors illustrated guide to the Racing Rules of Sailing. All the important parts of the rule book have been included. Part 1 trough 7 and Appendixes A, B, C and D.

You can lookup and scan all the pertinent rules when you want to study or if you are involved in a rules discussion. No need to bring a rulebook, they are on your phone! No more - out of date - paper books.
Writing a protest? Look up the rule number and impress the PC. You can even take it with you in the hearing and check out what your opponent is saying.

Lots of new features and new content. I’ve personally completely checked and rewritten the comments. There are also new illustrations, now viewable in landscape mode.


New search tool so you can find quickly what you need. And added a list of sailing terms with explanations.

We are working on new content for Match & Team Racing and are making sure that the changes for 2013-2016 are ready on January first.

Flog the Blog Day (52)

It has been a while since I wrote a 'Flog the Blog Day' post. By my calculations it should be number 52 - if I count all the months since I first started LTW (17 November 2007; FIRST POST)

52 months equals 4 years and 4 months. 1058 published posts - not counting the static pages. And over 3000 comments from readers or myself. Almost 90.000 unique readers visited just over 200000 times. Google Analytics states they came from 175 countries. Not quite all nations on Earth, but close enough.
Greenland being the biggest exception. Does nobody sail in Greenland?

'Flog the Blog Day' is reserved for a post where I tell you what my plans are and for asking you, to give me some feedback on the blog and how I'm doing. Should I write different posts? Should the colour of my blog change? More or less advertising? Different style? What about this new three column design? Is it working?

As for my plans: I'm preparing a new series for sailors. Going back to the basics.
Also in the pipeline are posts about the coming changes in the rules for the next cycle 2013-1016.
And I plan to review some books, programs and other 'accessories' that help with the rules. (I'm heavily involved in the next update of an iPhone/Android application called You-Tack)


I will continue with the (pillow)Cases until the Casebook is done and then have a look at the Call books for Match and Team Racing. I will try to explore the possibilities that other Social Media are providing to keep you informed about my travels and events. First one outside my own country is in two weeks, Act 1 in the Extreme Sailing Series to be sailed in Muscat, Oman.

DutyMan for the KWS

Well, the experiment has begun!

As you might know, I'm active in two local sailing clubs. In one (KWV Langweer) I do mostly Race Officers duties and in the other (KW Sneek) mostly Jury duties. For the latter one of my responsibilities is to find volunteers for all the protest committees at events during the year. Fill in the duty roster, so to speak.

Last year, during an ESS event, I came in contact with a representative of a web-based program that can help with this. That program is called DutyMan. It is already in use by many clubs in Great Britain and works very well - according to John - the guy who told me about this.

I expressed an interest and to cut a long story short - we are now using the system on a trail bases.

DutyMan applies internet technology to simplify the organisation of club duties. I've uploaded our calendar with each individual duty and all the data of our volunteers. Yesterday I gave the system the go ahead to send out the first mail to all members inviting them to log-on and fill in on which dates they can "Do their Duties" this year. This phase will take a month in which everybody is free to pick an indicate what they are willing to do. After that we will evaluate the holes in the roster and have a meeting. Then we will assign the duties for the rest of the year.

The calender will be kept up-to date on the internet and everybody can find out who will be joining them for a specific event and in what capacity. If, for whatever reason, a member is unavailable the program gives him or her the possibility to initiate a request to swap and find a replacement. The program sends reminders automatic and the PRO of the event is kept up to date with all mutations.

I have high hopes this will make my job a lot easier. I don't have approach each individual volunteer any more to get the PC roster filled....

Target Times at the WPIR

The Sailing Instructions at most events give a specific (approximate) time the races should last. Those are called: “Target Times” For some classes it is longer than for others, but in all cases it is the job of the RO on the course to set his/her marks so, that this time is accurate. There are unforeseen circumstance but with a constant wind speed and knowing the class these Target Times can be calculated.

Some time ago I was given the spreadsheets that do just that, for the Olympic Classes. They were made by David Cambell James. This is what he says on the first tab:

“ These charts have been developed to assist Race Officers in setting courses of the correct length to achieve target times as accurately as possible, they are only a guide and do not take account of tide or difficult sea conditions. It is assumed that the standard Olympic courses are used and set up using the “reference point” system with the reach leg at two thirds of the windward leg length and the final reach of 0.15 nm.

These charts will be particularly helpful to Race Officers who are unused to running races for a particular class as can happen when medal races are required. Race Officers experienced in a particular class may find the charts of less help.

The newest chart is the one for Women’s Match Racing which is difficult as target times and leg lengths are short and speeds can be inconsistent. We will continue to work on this chart.

The difficulties of producing these charts is increased for classes such as RS:X and 49ers where the hull moves into more of a planing mode between 8 and 10 knots with the corresponding increase in speed.

Included in the pack are two data collection sheets which can be used to check or adjust speeds included in the charts. By going to the overall speeds page any amendment of speed, measured in minutes per mile, will automatically update the relevant speed chart. If you have good speed data on a particular chart please let me know so that we can update the master sheets.

You can download this file and us it for you own races. It might need some adjustment for your particular courses and classes, but even for those who do not run Olympic Classes it should be a tool that can be used. You will need to start gathering data on your specifics, but with that you can fiddle with the numbers.

Rule 42 registration Program: JAVA 42

Dear readers of LTW,

First of all let me introduce myself. I'm Frank Koornstra, a 26 year-old Umpire who occasionaly does some Rule 42 Judging. Every event I'm amazed at how much time the rule 42 administration is taking, so I thought I'd try to make an application that could do this simple but hour devouring task.

Of course I know that there already are a ton of Excel/Access/whatever-kind of apps for this out there, created by the finest Judges in the field. The only thing about these apps is that they're not publicly downloadable (least of the troubles) but mostly that they're not multi-OS (linux, mac, windows, etc) compatible.

Therefore, I've created Java 42, a java application that will give a solution to the rule 42 administration of a regatta. Because it's a Java app it'll run on almost any OS, as long as you have Java installed (and you probably already have). It's a simple standalone (no install needed) application which (1) registers infringements and check them with a list of competitors if needed; (2) exports a notice for competitors; and (3) exports a notice for scoring. You can import the list of competitors from an Excel- or CSV-file.

I've fiddled around with the new features and again Thibaut has not disappointed me. This is an improvement. Specially the way boats are set in the track, makes it easier to get a proper scenario the first time.

I've returned from Hamburg. And hope to have some special footage for you soon. For some of the matches I was able to use a small camera fixed to my hat. After I've edited for the 'call' bits, you'll be able to see racing from an umpire point of view. Stay tuned!

Update for UK-Halsey Rules Quizzes program with a Racing Rules of Sailing -Test

We have developed a multiple choice test designed to help you apply the rules to common race-course scenarios. Instead of trying to "catch” you with tricky questions, we want you to learn the rules of common situations so that you will immediately know your rights and obligations when you get into similar situations on the race course. This test is a free addition to the Rules Program that you purchased. We purposely made the program a download instead of a physical CD so that we could provide no-cost upgrades this during the four-year rule cycle. This is a huge improvement to the program and we hope that you enjoy it. You'll find the test and the answers in the Lifted Tack section of the program. To get the test, just update your UK-Halsey Rules Quiz program. To do so, open the program while your computer is online. In the bottom right of the program's home page you will see in white letters, "Update Available”. Click there to start the process. You will not have to be online to take the test. I’ve done the test and came away with a score of 97%. Not perfect! I answered question 16 incorrectly. You’ll will have to take the test to see why.

A good tool to test your knowledge and understanding of the rules. With the correct answers, a comprehensive and clear explanation is provided. So you learn from your mistakes.

For those of you who are serious in learning the RRS, the UK-Halsey Rules Quiz program is very good tool. Like the newsletter says, no trickery or impossible scenarios. Basic situations you’ll come across in almost every race.

And wouldn’t it be great to be sure of what your rights and obligations are, in those situations?

Static v Animation

During the SNEEKWEEK we used Boat Scenario from Thibaut Gridel to assist us in drawing situations.
I asked the team to give me some feedback about it's usage and possible some pointers for Thibaut.

Most of them had not seen the program before and we took a half an hour to go to the possibilities in the beginning of the week. Practically all picked up the skill to draw a fairly accurate digram during the rest of the event. But to be absolutely correct in a difficult protest does take more time then is usually available.
Perhaps we only need to use it more to get the skill to do it quickly?

Second point to improve is the possibility to draw boats who sail 'by the lee'. That cannot (yet) be done and is sometimes needed in a situation.

The wind is always coming from the top of the page. Personally I don't think that is a problem, but there were others who wanted to be able to put in their own wind direction or turn the diagram...

I think it is a very useful to be able to draw with a program like Boat Scenario. In a couple of cases it was a big help to let the sailors see what we found as facts...

ISAF Q&A 2009-025

In continuation from Q&A 2009-020, this one is again about a three boat situation at a mark. This time at a windward mark.

The questions are about the rights a boat has, while sailing on a proper course as inside boat, while having mark-room from a second boat, in regards to a third. Download the ISAF Q&A 2009-025 here.

In contrast to Q&A 2009-024 these answers are pretty straightforward.

In both scenarios rule 18 does not apply between the boat with mark-room from a second boat, towards a third. Therefore al normal rules apply including restrictions under 15 and 16.

I’m taking both Q&A’s (024 & 025) with me to a presentation I’m giving to a group of sailors tomorrow evening. To see how they react to these – in my opinion fairly frequently occurring – scenarios.

 

On a side note. Both pictures in the Q&A are drawn with boats and symbols I haven’t seen before. It isn’t TSS or Boat Scenario.

And it isn’t Angelo’s Protest Diagram Kit v2.doc.

Rob Overton appointed Chairman US Sailing RR Committee

PRESS REALEASE FROM UK HALSEY:

UK-HALSEY’S RULES QUIZ GURU APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF U.S. SAILING’S RULES COMMITTEE.

The highly regarded on-line racing rules program developed by UK-Halsey Sailmakers just had its authority made more compelling by the recent appointment of Rob Overton to be the new Chairman of US SAILING’s Racing Rules Committee (RRC). Rob is the author of the answers to all of the Rules Quiz questions, and now he is the US’s chief rule writer.

Having Rob Overton contribute to UK-Halsey’s widely used Rules Quiz program was a deliberate decision made far in advance of his new appointment. He has been a member of US SAILING’s Racing Rules Committee since 1993 and one of just five international rules writers who drafted the new Section C rules that took effect on January 1^st of this year. He is a member of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Team Race Call Book Working Party as well as an International Umpire.

“I am really excited to participate with the rules quiz program,” said Overton. “I think it is a great way to learn the rules. Because the quizzes are animated, you get to know the game as well as the rules, and knowing the game is what you really have to learn. Plus the animations makes learning the rules less dry and more fun.”

The changes to the rules were so substantial that the boat “in the wrong” changed in three different quizzes. “With so many sailors depending on our quizzes to understand the rules, we needed someone with Rob’s breadth of knowledge to make sure we got it right,” said UK-Halsey’s President, Butch Ulmer. Rob also served on the small international group that re-wrote the rules of Section C for the 2009-2012 rules.

In the past the Rules Quizzes were sold on a Compact Disk, but that format was too limiting. With modern technology and increased use of the web, we now offer an expanded rule quiz program as a download. The download format allows users to receive numerous free updates with the click of a button. For example, the Rules Quiz program was updated 10 times within the first 6 weeks of 2009. Another advantage of being a download is that buyers do not have to wait on the post office go get the program.

The UK-Halsey’s Rules Quiz program has several other advantages. The animations can be played at full-screen size and users can adjust the speed of the animations. A members-only section, named The Lifted Tack, provides instructional videos, a blog and a PDF library. In many of the videos, which were show at Butch Ulmer’s rules seminars, you see the quizzes being used to teach the rules, an approach which makes the explanation and tactical considerations much easier to understand. Currently there are seven videos as part of the program and more will be added shortly.

Like in the press release I too find the change in the rules much more substantial, then first anticipated. The flurry of ISAF Q&A’s recently published, proves that a lot of questions have to be answered. And some of the answers need careful study to understand the logic behind them.

We will need all the ‘GURUS’ to take the lead!

Boat Scenario 200902 Released

Thibaut has let me know that a new version of Boat Scenario was released yesterday. On the release note, the new features since last release:

• configurable zone at marks
• boats resized to real world size
• multiple series in a scenario
• a list widget for tracks edition
• color chooser for tracks
• nicer sail drawing
  
• and a startboat

New features like these will keep coming in the future. The site also has an RSS feed http://boats.berlios.de/feed/atom. So you can get updates in your feedreader.
